2009 Officiating Clinic
This Saturday morning, at the Riverside Inn in Bracebridge, the new GMHL officiating staff and crew will assemble for the 2nd annual GMHL Officiating Clinic.
Under the direction of new Referee-In-Chief Al Zimmer, and with contributions from Ass't RIC Joe Conway, Supervisors Ralph Sparks and Richard Wand, and Officials Coordinator Marshall Uretsky, the clinic will set the tone for the this upcoming season, with major improvements in systems and protocols, ushering in a new era in performance and professionalism.
Al and Joe have done a terrific job recruiting, and along with the word getting out that the GMHL was pressing forward with these majory changes, the league has attracted some top level officials to the staff for '09-'10.
Owners Meeting
Next Tuesday in Barrie, GMHL team owners will meet to devise next season's schedule.
The league recently voted to increase the regular season to 44 games, and reduce the effects of any byes in the playoffs by instituting a Best of Three Qualifying Round that must be completed in 5 days.
Also, there are teams that have chosen to move their home game nights or are in considering it in order to attract the biggest crowds possible, not to mention alleviate the problem of having too many teams playing home games on the same night.

GMHL conducts 2009 Entry Draft, while owners' meeting produces new alignment and promises for higher level operations.
In many ways, a new era has begun for the GMHL, with some new teams in, some old teams out, a new officiating staff and crew, and an agreement that will see all our member teams produce a better product, both on and off the ice.
Gone are the Tamworth Cyclones, the Espanola Kings, the Ontario Lightning Rams, and Nipissing Alouettes, all on Leaves-of-Absence this season; the Ville-Marie Dragons have moved to Powassan; the town of Ville-Marie has replaced the Dragons with a new club of their own, the Voyageurs; and the league has opened up shop in Thessalon, ON, as the Algoma Avalanche!
With 13 teams in the mix for 2009-10, the league will move to an alignment of one division, with an unbalanced schedule, will increase the number of games in the regular season to 44, and once again, will see all teams make the playoffs.
The league has a new Referee-In-Chief in Al Zimmer, an Assistant R.I.C. » Read the Full StoryPosted June 11, 2009 Second Team nationally, First Team All-Star, ECAC West!The Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League is pleased to announce that Karl Linden, the former Bradford Rattlers Captain from the league's inaugural season in 2006-07, has been named Second Team RBK Division III All-American, selected amongst all Division 3 clubs nationally, and First Team All-ECAC West, leading the team to a 16-3-3.
What's most impressive is that the All-American status is a combination of athletic achievement COMBINED with academic excellence!
Linden led the powerhouse Rattlers to the GMHL title in that first year, and had numerous scholarship offers from NCAA programs. While there were several 'full ride' offers from a handful of Division 1 programs, Linden did not hold down the academic grades at the time to get through the 'Clearinghouse'. This is a system which guarantees athletes achieve certain academic standards in prerequisite courses and disciplines to assure high level athletes are also high level students. This prevents universities from bringing in players only for their athletic prowess.
Fortunately, Linden had several Division 3 offers from a number of quality schools like Elmira, where the academic standards are high, but did provide some leeway for players to enter university with the opportunity to participate in athletics, and the chance to show they were motivated to improve their grades.
Well, Mr. » Read the Full StoryPosted June 08, 2009 Minister of Industry Tony Clement subjects HC to the Competitions act!Since the inception of the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League 3 years ago, Hockey Canada has imposed sanctions to try and protect their territory and deter their members from jumping ship and getting involved with our league, and even communities from allowing our programs into their arenas.
After numerous complaints to the Competition Bureau of the federal government, Minister of Industry, Tony Clement has removed Hockey Canada's power, limited their ability to impose these sanctions and restored the freedom of individuals, organizations and communities to pursue the game without fear of repercussions in the future.
The following is the official statement issued by Minister Clement's office as to their efforts to impact Hockey Canada's attempts to monopolize the game and restore the freedom that Canadians have a right to expect as citizens of this country!

The GMHL is pleased to announce the league will be holding our 2009 Officiating Clinic on Saturday, July 4, scheduled for Bracebridge, ON, just across the road from Gravenhurst is now confirmed.
The course will be conducted by RIC Al Zimmer, along with Ass't RIC Joe Conway, with contributions from Supervisors Ralph Sparks and Richard Wand, as well as a possible special guest to two.
The clinic will be held at the Muskoka Riverside Inn, Bracebridge, from 10am to approximately 4pm. Morning coffee and refreshments will be served, and lunch will also be provided.
The staff for '09-'10 is shaping up extremely well to this point, with several Level 4 and 5 officials recently committing to the league for next season, in large part due to the strong recruiting efforts of Al and Joe, and the number of officials now stands at over 40, north and south combined.
